Trisomy 13 is described as a fatal genetic defect. It is less common and more severe then Trisomy 18. Although a large number of infants with this diagnosis do not survive to term during pregnancy some do. A small number live even longer and can benefit from palliative care support.
Be wary of internet stories of children described as Trisomy 13 miracles as they are usually not true Trisomy 13 but rather a mosaic which can carry a different prognosis as it is technically a different genetic defect. Plan for the worse but hope for the best enjoying each moment of your child’s life.
